SUFFER Out Now on Steam! Horror Punk FPS

Akron, Ohio - December 11th, 2018 - Solo indie-dev game studio Anarchy Softworks LLC has released its first game, SUFFER, for Windows PCs on Steam! Set in an abstract dystopia, in SUFFER players take on the corporate police state with a ninja sword and ludicrous amounts of firepower! Boasting "oldschool" 90s difficulty and style, SUFFER is a throwback to the glory days of 2D sprites in FPS, abstract level design, and hordes of baddies to blow away - all stitched together with a horror-punk twist! This is a game for the diehards out there.

The wind rushes past, toxic fumes swirl around newly forming blood-mist. Another police state goon goes down, but still your blade is not satiated. The State's omnipresent digital eyes see everything and their beasts of machine and flesh are upon you. As their screeching commands are snuffed out by shotgun fire, you can't help but smile as you reload. This is about to get interesting!

"It's been a dream of mine since as long as I can remember to make video games - so it's a surreal feeling launching SUFFER on Steam, and I couldn't be more excited! I grew up on a healthy dose of games like Duke3D, Quake, and Blood, but FPS games have changed quite a lot since then. With SUFFER I wanted to make a game that paid tribute to that style, while being unique in terms of gameplay experience. With acrobatic movement, a frenetic mix of swordfighting and gunslinging, and a dystopian horror atmosphere, SUFFER is game meant to challenge and entertain at every turn."

SUFFER is for hardcore gamers who want to test their skills! Injecting fast paced FPS action with ninja-sword-fighting-acrobatics, this is a throwback to the golden days of PC shooters that offers fun, addicting gameplay with a post-industrial nightmare theme and punk attitude.

  • Intense Single Player Campaign
  • 75 Handcrafted Levels - Abstract Design Anarchy
  • Brutal Difficulty For Hardcore Gamers
  • Colorful Sprite Graphics Inspired By 90's Pixelated Glory
  • Original Punk/Metal Soundtrack

It is time to destroy the demon police state. Purchase SUFFER on Steam for $9.99 - but it's 10% off until December 17th, 2018:

SUFFER Launches in 3 Days!

Hey friends!

I'm super duper excited to announce that after four years of development, my first commercial release, SUFFER, is coming out December 11th, 2018 on Steam! I am very proud of my work and I really think SUFFER turned out awesome. I was going for a very gritty, fast-paced FPS with retro 90s inspired visuals, and here is what I have to show for it:

The dark, toxic atmosphere and gory decor really bring me back to playing DOOM, Alien Trilogy, and Blood as a kid. Duke Nukem, Quake, Half-Life - all of the classics inspired me to get into making games and I hope that SUFFER pays tribute to them while providing the gaming community with even more ridiculous FPS glory.

Add SUFFER to your Steam Wishlist, it drops December 11th, 2018

SUFFER [demo] 1.3 is live!

Hey Friends!

SUFFER [demo] v1.3 is live now! So remember last time when i said the SUFFER [demo] had been updated to the final version of the engine? That is not the truth! Well, it was true at the time but it's no longer true because that version quickly became outdated. The engine had seen some serious updates and the full version is just about ready to be sent off to the press for reviews. i figured that i would patch up my demo level a bit to get my mind off the press release. Here's what to expect:

  • Upgraded from Unity 2017.3 to 2018.2.14f1
  • Stability/Performance Optimizations
  • Bug Fixes
  • Graphical Improvements: sprites/lighting/fullscreen filters
  • Improved Animation Quality
  • Demo Level minor updates

This version of the demo is probably going to be the definitive release. The upgrade to the latest Unity build really helped me get a more stable framerate and i am super pleased with how SUFFER looks and runs now. There have been several little things implemented that i feel add up to make a much more polished product. i hope you enjoy the latest build of SUFFER, expect the full version on Steam this December!

The soundtrack is also live on YouTube if you are into that kind of thing:

Unity 2018.2 Uplift and Surprises (maybe)

Hey Friends!

i've been super duper busy getting my final build of SUFFER ready for release! Since uploading my 1.2 update for the SUFFER [demo] there has been a ton of progress. i've been taking the entire month to polish the game and so far it's been absolutely worth it. The graphics have seen a huge improvement, as has the framerate. Uplifting to Unity 2018.2 was (mostly) painless, but it does require a bit more testing. i hope to send out press release copies next week, after pushing out a 1.3 update for the demo and maybe something special (as long as i have time to get it working!) It's almost release time and i am burning the candle at both ends to make sure i put out a product i can stand behind!

SUFFER is coming to Steam Dec 11, 2018

SUFFER [demo] 1.2 is live!

Hey Friends!

i've been working super duper hard lately to get a final build of SUFFER. i think that i am pretty much there, so i took some time and released an update to the demo! The SUFFER [demo] has been updated to version 1.2, and it is a completely different game. It is now just a single level, but the level is brand new and 100% exclusive to the itch.io public demo! That means this level won't be making it into the final Steam release of SUFFER, so it's worth checking out the demo even if you've played the old version or are planning on getting the full version. Grab it below on https://anarchysoftworks.itch.io/

SUFFER has been in development for almost 4 years now, it's hard to believe that it's going to be releasing soon. i'm genuinely getting pretty nervous about it! Thanks for all of the support!

SUFFER Press Release

October 17th, 2018 - Akron, OH - Anarchy Softworks LLC is releasing its first game, SUFFER, for Windows Desktop PCs on December 11th, 2018 via Steam! Set in an abstract dystopia ruled by demons, in SUFFER players become The Spirit of Anarchy to take on the corporate police state with nothing but a ninja sword and a hailstorm of bullets! Boasting “oldschool” PC game difficulty, Suffer is a brutal homage to classic FPS games with a horror-punk twist.

The air is thick with toxic smog, acrid smoke, and bomb shrapnel. State Sentinels and Observers bare down on you, the organic eyes twitching rhythmically to mechanical grinds and clicks as they screech orders through electronic speakers. Unloading every last one of your bullets into these freaks is satisfying, but the Riot Police ahead shoot first and ask questions later - unfortunately for them, a blade through the chest will be the only answer they get.

“My biggest goal with SUFFER was to tell the story of this world purely through the atmosphere and gameplay. There is very little in the way of cutscenes, my focus was to craft a challenging experience where the player would learn by exploring the environment and fighting off enemies. The details are left to the imagination of the player, sort of like the classic games I grew up playing. When the story takes a backseat to engaging gameplay, the mind wanders playfully.”

SUFFER is a game for hardcore gamers in need of a challenge. Injecting fast paced FPS action with ninja-sword-fighting-acrobatics, this throwback to the golden days of PC shooters offers fun, addicting gameplay with a dystopian nightmare theme and punk attitude.
  • Intense Single Player Campaign
  • 75 Handcrafted Levels - Abstract Design Anarchy
  • Brutal difficulty, for those seeking a challenge
  • Colorful Sprite Graphics Inspired By 90's Pixelated Glory
  • Original Punk/Metal Soundtrack

Of Box Art and Steam Releases

Hey friends! Exciting (and super busy) times for me lately. SUFFER is headed to Steam! Special thanks to my dude Brian H who made the original box artwork - he did an amazing job! The game's store page has been submitted for approval and i couldn't be more stoked! i've been hard at work filling out boring forms and doing marketing stuff. This one-man indie dev thing is a lot of work sometimes...

There is a new trailer too! i made this especially for the Steam store page, but you can check it out here if for whatever reason you just can't wait:

Anyways, thanks for reading. Take care of yourselves out there, this place can be brutal.

Love and respect,

SUFFER Original Game Soundtrack OUT NOW!

Hey Friends! i've just finished writing, recording, mixing and mastering the entire SUFFER soundtrack! This has been a serious amount of effort, but i couldn't be happier with the results. The music needed to be ridiculous horror punk/ska and fucking death metal. i won't sit here and write about it anymore, so here is the link for the album, totally free on bandcamp!

SUFFER Official Website!

Short post today - i have updated the official SUFFER page on AnarchySoftworks.com. It looks pretty legit, if i do say so myself:

http://anarchysoftworks.com/suffer.html

It's kind of a big page, it took me awhile to compress all of the gifs and high quality screenshots. Mobile isn't where i want it yet... But being a one man team means i have to live with not everything being perfect. Thanks for the interest in my games!

SUFFER Official Game Trailer

Hey friends!

The trailer for SUFFER is out! i won't waste much time writing about it, i think the game basically speaks for itself:

As you can see, it's extremely fast paced and brutal! SUFFER is meant to be incredibly challenging, just like the games it was inspired by. The demo is coming out next week, so dust off your gaming keyboard/mouse and warm up your old CRT because it's going to take everything you've got to claim victory over this one.

The game will go live here: https://anarchysoftworks.itch.io/suffer-demo on July 30th, 2018 - one week from today. i hope you enjoy it!

SUFFER [demo] coming soon!

Hey internet!
Development on SUFFER has been extremely productive. i am nearing the end of my final QA phase for a public demo release that should be out by the end of this month! i'm gathering feedback from a few beta testers (aka my friends and family) for the next week while i ready a final production build. Being a solo dev is brutal and rewarding, i love it.

The demo is 25 levels and completely *FREE* to play! No registration or online accounts required. i do ask that you send any feedback/criticism/angry rants my way, but even that is totally optional!
Here are some teaser screens - i hope you dig the style:

SUFFER has been in development for over 3 years now and i am honestly terrified of going live with it. i am proud of the work i have into it though and i just know there are a few of you out there who will appreciate the brutal difficulty and retro feel. It's a game that i enjoy playing, it reminds me of the many hours i spent in front of an old CRT monitor playing DOOM when i was a kid.
Enough rambling, i have so much to do still! Stay tuned for more updates!

Horror Punk Music

It's been a hot minute since i've posted an update so here goes nothing! i have been making crazy awesome progress on SUFFER, getting ready to publish a demo build soon. The game just needs a bit more polish, testing, and music!

So far i have finished recording 10 songs for the game's soundtrack. i do everything myself so it takes a long time. Composing the music is insanely fun for me and i really enjoy the creativity that recording live tracks allow. The drums and keyboard all programmed with a drum machine and some VST instruments, but the guitar and bass are recorded in my homebrew bedroom-studio.
For the gearsluts out there i am rocking an Ibanez Prestige 7 with John Petruccci signature neck pickup and a DJENT pickup thingy in the bridge. My pedal board only consists of an Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah Pedal, a BloodDrive overdrive pedal, and my personal favorite piece of gear: The Legend of Fuzz pedal from Devi Ever Bit. All of this feeds into an old Fender Blues DeVille Delux tube amp! It's a ricketty old amp with crusty pots but it gets the job done. My bass setup is even simpler. i use Ibanez 505 straight into a Fender practice amp my buddy gave me! No pedals or effects, i just crank up the volume and put the mic close. Super punk rock right there.

To me the Punk scene is all about DIY, and SUFFER really embodies that. i make use of what i have and the limited nature of my setup (and being a one man team!) requires me to be extra creative. i really enjoy the challenge and i often surprise myself with the outcome of my experiments! The music in SUFFER is heavily inspired by retro video games, hardcore ska/punk and the metal! But enough babble - one can only explain music so much, please give the demo album a listen here

Thanks for reading,

Horror Punk Graphics!

Hey friends!

i've been hard at work finalizing the look and feel of SUFFER! The game's main theme is horror punk and every aspect of the game is being designed around that. You'll fight off Orwellian riot police backed up by demons, surveillance bots, and stitched together flesh golems in an abstract industrial nightmare city. SUFFER is dark, fast, and brutal so the soundtrack is intensely hardcore. the tortured metal and punk is kept alive by rusty gore machines and drowned out by gunfire.

toon shading and low res textures

Today i will be writing about the graphical style of SUFFER. i am a huge fan of 90s first person shooters and it shows in my work. The first thing most people will notice about SUFFER is the sprites! Each weapon, enemy, and power-up is (poorly) hand drawn and animated! This means that the comic book guns and monsters contrast nicely with the environment. The oldschool first person shooters like Wolfenstein and DOOM were actually 2D games with fancy effects to make them appear 3D and i really wanted to emulate that style - but with modern 3D level design.

The sprites in SUFFER are very much inspired by comic books and old video games - super pixelated details but thick black "ink" outlines. i'm very happy with how the 2D sprites look in the 3D world. It took a bit of tinkering but i'm glad i put in the effort. Hand drawn and animated sprites in a FPS is unheard of anymore, and i really think the style has so much to offer!

In order to blend these with modern 3D graphics i implemented thick black outlines on all geometry with a cartoon cel shading. All textures are super low resolution (128x128) and utilize the same drawn with black ink look. Combine all of this with Unity's built in lighting and a full screen pixelation effect and suddenly SUFFER's comic book video game world comes to life! Thanks for reading!

introducing SUFFER

Hey friends!

i have been working extremely hard on my upcoming game, SUFFER! This game has been in development for almost 3 years now and i am finally at a place where i want to show it off to the world. It's still pretty early in development but it is finally looking like a real game:

SUFFER is a retro-inspired first person action game! 90s style pixelated 3D graphics are mated with hand drawn comic book sprites to offer a ridiculous experience. The fast paced action is accompanied by blistering punk rock and death metal - and the agonizing screams of your enemies! This game is for the hardcore gamer in need of a challenge. It is also named after my favorite Bad Religion album!

Anarchy Softworks is just one guy - a lone, deranged lunatic with a vision to spread anarchy and fun through video games! Because of this, i am free to make whatever kind of games i want! On the flip side of that i also have to actually make the games. By myself. But that is my favorite part! i love to code engines and build levels! Writing and recording music, designing and drawing weapons and enemies! Everything about making games is super fun and i am going to keep doing it!

SUFFER is inspired by hard-as-fuck games like DOOM, Half-Life, Super Meat Boy, and Shinobi! It's light on story and heavy on fast action! I can't wait for you to play it. Pretty soon I'll be releasing a trailer - but i've got to get some guitar tracks recorded first!

Until next time,
anarchy
